The dilemma of polypharmacy: a growing prevalence

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

Older people have higher rates of chronic illness than any other age population and, subsequently, are more likely to be taking multiple medications. As a result, polypharmacy presents as a significant risk for elderly people and contributes to increased adverse events such as falls, confusion and functional decline. In addition, polypharmacy is a significant contributor to preventable hospitalisation and associated with poor clinical outcomes.

The aim of this webcast is to understand polypharmacy and identify strategies for nursing staff across all health care domains to actively be involved in addressing this medication management issue.

Topics covered:

  • What is polypharmacy?
  • Polypharmacy implications
  • Suboptimal prescribing
  • Strategies for improvement

This webcast is available for registered participants for 3 weeks.
