The current outbreak of Ebola virus disease in West Africa has been declared by the World Health Organization as a public health emergency of international concern, and the United Nations has declared it a threat to international peace and security. What are the implications for Australian health services and clinicians?

While Ebola virus is a very serious disease with high mortality rates it is not readily transmitted from person to person and good infection control practice has been shown to prevent spread.
