Child and Adolescent Mental Health Nursing – Clinical Assessment

This unit of study is designed to prepare paediatric nurses for the assessment and management of children and young adults who present with mental health problems. Particular reference is made to mental health nursing assessment and diagnostic categories of mental disorders. Case assessment, planning and implementation are also examined. The unit of study introduces the nurse to current trends in psychopharmacology, behavioural therapy, living with mental disorders and the impact of mental disorders on the client and their family.

d) rationalise use of early intervention model for infants, children and adolescents

e) critically evaluate current policies and programs related to the wellbeing of infants, children and adolescents in the community from state, territory or commonwealth initiatives

f) demonstrate an awareness and sensitivity towards children and their families who come from indigenous and/or culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds

g) reflect on own values, beliefs in relation to working with infants, children and adolescents who have a mental illness or disorder.
