Day surgery is an increasingly popular option for patients requiring elective surgery. Modern day surgery has evolved considerably due to advances in both surgical and anaesthetic techniques, providing safe, efficient and cost effective patient care in today’s fast paced healthcare environment. This unit of study is designed to explore the unique role of registered nurses working in contemporary day surgery settings, and examines the challenges they face in the provision of patient centred care. The topics introduced in this unit of study include; day surgery environments and the models of care, patient transition from pre-admission to safe discharge and the legal and professional aspects of patient care.
