The Advanced Diploma of Nursing course is designed for enrolled nurses who wish to extend their knowledge and skills in a chosen specialty:

  • HLT64115 Advanced Diploma of Nursing (Acute Care)
  • HLT64115 Advanced Diploma of Nursing (Aged Care and Individual Support)
  • HLT64115 Advanced Diploma of Nursing (Critical Care)
  • HLT64115 Advanced Diploma of Nursing (Perioperative)

Course overview

This qualification reflects the role of enrolled nurses with advanced skills who work in a specialised area of nursing practice. At this level, enrolled nurses integrate and adapt specialised, technical and theoretical knowledge to address a diverse range of clinical situations and challenges in their area of specialisation. They contribute to the continuous improvement of clinical practice using research and participation in broader organisational quality processes. Enrolled nurses retain responsibility for their own actions while remaining accountable to the Registered Nurse/Midwife for all delegated functions.

Our course consists of ten (10) units, three (3) core units and seven (7) elective units. The normal progression for students is 18 months when studying two units of competence per term. Each unit of competence is 75 hours of study.

Assessments

These units of study are delivered at AQF level 6. Students are required to demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills, both at an academic level and in clinical practice. Approximately 15 hours of study per week when studying two units at a time.

*Students are able to take up to three years to complete this qualification.

**Applicants must currently be employed within the area of specialty and must nominate an approved workplace assessor to supervise workplace experience placement.

Qualification entry requirements

Entry to this qualification is open to individuals who are currently working in Australia as an enrolled nurse and hold current registration as an enrolled nurse without notation with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

Course entry requirements

Applicants must currently be employed within the area of specialty and will need to nominate an approved workplace assessor to supervise work experience placement. The workplace assessor must be a registered nurse with a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE 40116).

This course is delivered and assessed in English. Applicants will need to have the necessary language, literacy and numeracy skills (LLN) to interpret and apply relevant information at the level this course demands.

Credit transfer

You may apply for credit transfer (CT) if you have successfully completed unit/s in the HLT64115 Advanced Diploma of Nursing previously.

To apply for credit transfer, you must complete and submit the following documentation:

  • A completed and signed copy of the Application for Credit Transfer form; and
  • A certified copy of the qualification and record of results or statement of attainment of previous units completed.

  • set in place a complaint handling system that is client focussed and helps ACN to prevent grievances from recurring
  • ensure that any complaints are resolved promptly, objectively and with sensitivity and in complete confidentiality
  • ensure that the views of each complainant and respondent are respected and that any party to a grievance is not discriminated against nor victimised

Suman has facilitated bridging programs for overseas nurses and local refresher courses for many years and has a keen interest in exploring the transition of practitioners into the contemporary Australian nursing practice. She has over 17 years teaching experience in both VET sector and higher education in Australia. Suman has worked in various clinical settings as a registered nurse in public and private sectors in Australia and has experience working in regulations. In addition to facilitation of student learning, Suman continues to contribute towards training and supervision of workplace assessors and professional development programs.
