What inspired you to pursue a career in nursing?
Nursing aligns to my values as a person and harnesses many qualities that I pride myself on such as care, compassion and empathy. I am an advocate for the right to access a quality health care journey and am fortunate to be a physical and emotional support during someone’s challenging time.
Tell us about your current role and what it involves
I am fortunate enough to hold dual roles at my current workplace, which allows me to use a vast range of nursing skills. My Respiratory Clinical Nurse Consultant role affords me opportunities to participate in nurse-led interventions like the nicotine dependency clinic and lung nodule investigation pathways. My Educator role allows me to train, teach and assess in several continuing professional development courses and resuscitation program to a diverse range of health care clinicians.
Why do you believe it is important for nurses to be part of their professional organisation?
Belonging to our professional organisation allows opportunities of professional growth and learning, mentoring and networking, leadership development, and having influence at the table in national and local policy development.
What is your favourite way to unwind after a busy shift?
Outside of nursing, I am a dancer in a Brisbane-based independent company. We train in Latin and urban styles and have had opportunities to perform on big stages and stadiums. I love the creativity and freedom that dance gives, and playing my role in part of a bigger team – just like in nursing!
You have a week’s leave – where are you headed?
The beach! I love walking on the sand, hiking in the hinterlands, and swimming in the ocean. It instantly calms me down and relaxes me. We are very lucky in Queensland to have so many beautiful beaches.
If you were not a Nurse, what do you think you would be doing instead?
I would either be a high school teacher or a social worker. My work as an Educator allows me to use my teaching skills and use lots of psychosocial support skills in my Nicotine Treatment Specialist role too. Best of all worlds!
What is the best advice given to you?
Being told that “The squeaky wheel gets the oil” by Mum had helped me a lot with my confidence and speaking up. I have learnt to hold space for myself in both my personal and professional life, as I know I have a lot to offer and share.
What would you say to a Nurse who is considering joining ACN?
I’d say go for it! ACN membership opens many doors across the learning, leadership and advocacy space. Having a voice in nursing is so important in shaping our direction as a profession.
