Welcome to ACN’s Member Spotlight, a regular feature highlighting our wonderful nurses, and their inspirational stories.
We are delighted to introduce you to Emma Kelly MACN. Driven, engaged and passionate about nursing, Emma is a valued member of the ACN community, who has also recently been appointed into a Leadership Support position with the NSW-Sydney Region leadership team.
What inspired you to pursue a career in nursing?
From the age of 18, I worked in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly in oncology, where I saw first-hand the challenges patients and families faced. While that work was meaningful, I felt a strong pull to be more directly involved in patient care — to use my skills and compassion to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. That desire to help others on a more personal level is what inspired me to pursue a career in nursing.
Tell us about your current role and what it involves.
I work as a Cosmetic Nurse and Clinical Educator, training and mentoring health professionals in advanced aesthetic procedures and safe practice. Alongside my clinical work, I am the Chief Operating Officer of a global education company, overseeing the delivery of high-quality training programs across multiple countries. My role combines hands-on clinical expertise with strategic leadership, ensuring we maintain the highest standards in education, compliance, and industry innovation.
Why do you believe it is important for nurses to be part of their professional organisation?
Being part of a professional organisation like ACN provides nurses with a collective voice to influence policy, advocate for our profession, and shape the future of healthcare. It fosters connection, mentorship, and knowledge sharing, which are vital for professional growth and maintaining high standards of practice. By engaging with our professional body, we not only invest in our own development but also contribute to the advancement, recognition, and unity of the nursing profession.
What is your favourite way to unwind after a busy shift?
I prioritise looking after myself — whether that’s yoga, the gym, a good night’s sleep, or spending quality time with my loved ones. It took me a long time to realise that if I’m not strong, I can’t be strong for those around me. For me, self-love and self-care aren’t luxuries, they’re essential.
What is the best advice given to you?
Look after yourself first, never stop laughing, and always be part of a supportive community.
What would you say to a nurse who is considering joining ACN?
Do it! Honestly, I didn’t know about ACN until a few years ago, but since joining I’ve discovered an incredible community, made wonderful friends, and received support I wish I’d had much earlier in my career. I’m excited for ACN to be part of my journey in the years ahead as a nurse.
