Unit Manager, Port Phillip Prison

  • Full time, ongoing position
  • Base salary: $114,400 plus super

The Unit Manager is an integral part of the Forensic Mental Health Services leadership team operating from Port Phillip Prison on the St Paul’s Unit. The unit holds 30 beds and provides intensive clinical, psychosocial support, independent living skills training and rehabilitation to prisoners with a severe and enduring mental illness. Staff assist in the recovery and rehabilitation of patients in preparation for being able to reintegrate back into mainstream prison environments or back into the community. The Outpatients Service provides specialist consultation to the Primary Mental Health Service.

The Unit Manager has responsibility and accountability for providing high level management and direction for the overall operation of the Unit and Outpatients Service including planning, development of human, physical and financial resources, and overseeing the delivery of multi-disciplinary services.

This position engages with other Port Phillip Prison managers and service providers across Justice Health, Forensicare, G4S custodial and program staff, to improve and maintain the Unit and the service’s management, clinical, educational and support activities.


About you:
You are an experienced people manager with exceptional organisation skills. You have demonstrated knowledge and experience in the provision of rehabilitative care encompassing mental health care and living skills, along with a clear understanding of the pathway for reintegration into mainstream prison environment or the community.

You will have strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds, and stakeholders at all levels. Your ability to adapt and manage continuing change within a complex environment is imperative to the success of the role. You will also have the ability to build positive morale and maintain staff engagement and commitment.
