DESCRIPTION

The course content is designed to meet the educational needs of clinicians working in the diverse perioperative environments. The core unit of study highlights the practice and philosophy of perioperative nursing. Pre-, intra- and postoperative nursing assessment and care are explored in depth, as well as the broader aspects of legal and ethical issues associated with perioperative nursing roles.

The unique structure of our Graduate Certificate allows you to tailor a qualification to your needs or interests. The course is made up of one core subject, one specialty elective and two electives. With specialty electives in anaesthetic nursing, instrument/circulating nursing and post anaesthetic recovery unit care, you can choose one or all three, allowing you to specialise in one area or giving you a broader experience.

Our team is here to support you along the way and you can always talk to one of our staff to choose your pathway.

WHERE THIS QUALIFICATION CAN TAKE YOU

A Graduate Certificate in Perioperative Nursing is an investment in your future and will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to ensure better outcomes for your patients and progress your career, leading to opportunities in clinical education, management and specialist nursing roles.

Sally Sutherland-Fraser

RN,BEd (Adult Ed), MEd, Cert (Periop Nsg), Cert IV TAE, MACN, FACORN

Sally has more than 30 years’ experience in perioperative practice in Australia and the United Kingdom. In 2013 Sally established Health Education and Learning Partnerships with Menna Davies to provide innovative education and consultancy services for the healthcare industry and clinicians in metropolitan, rural and remote locations of Australasia and the Pacific. Sally is a passionate advocate for education and professional standards and has held executive positions in the NSW Operating Theatre Association and ACORN. In 2010 Sally was the proud recipient of the ACORN Excellence in Perioperative Nursing Award.

I was a student at the College of Nursing in the mid 1990’s when it was located at Camperdown. It was here that I completed my certificate in perioperative nursing as a “distance ed” student. At the time, I had been working in perioperative settings for more than five years, including time as a staff nurse in London. I had gained lots of diverse clinical experience as an instrument nurse in all the major specialties and had enjoyed my lengthy placements in anaesthetic and recovery nurse roles. Something was missing. I knew WHAT to do and WHEN to do it, but I didn’t understand WHY. I was proud to be technically proficient, but I realised that without the underpinning knowledge I would never become a true nurse. I chose to study at the College because of its reputation and its location - I walked past the front door on my way home from work at the Royal Alexander Children's Hospital. Over that year of study I had many “eureka” moments learning about the philosophy of perioperative nursing, the fundamentals of sterilisation and the pathophysiology of pain. Over that year of study I was able to hand-deliver all of my assignments! As well as finding this quite amusing, it was also a great way to talk about my developing practice as a perioperative nurse with my course tutor Kim Bryant and course co-ordinator Menna Davies. Both of these inspiring women have become great mentors and are friends to this day. Looking back, it’s clear that my time as a student at the College truly ignited my passion for learning.

Testimonial

‘On completion of the Post Grad Certificate in Perioperative Nursing at Mercy Health, our nurses are able to work proficient in all perioperative areas. As Educator I continue to oversee their ongoing professional development. We encouraged our Nurses to assist in the maintaining of a speciality portfolio. This helps the Nurse consolidate their learning whilst being responsible for a Surgical Speciality. We also enrol our new post graduates into ACCCN -Advanced Life Support course & the Preceptorship course. In the past 7 years we have been able to offer our graduates ongoing employment on completion of the course. We have 100% retention rate at Mercy Health.’
