This unit of study is designed to introduce neonatal nurses and midwives to the professional issues faced within contemporary neonatal practice. This unit of study is based upon the Australian College of Neonatal Nurses (ACNN) (2012) domains for neonatal nursing.

The aim of this unit of study is to facilitate the student’s personal and professional growth by: promoting new ways of thinking and learning, developing teaching and mentoring abilities, enhancing communication skills, and exploring potential for leadership and practice development, within the workplace. Units of study covered include: professional practice, research and enquiry, leadership, communication and change, thinking, teaching and learning, legal, cultural and ethical issues.

Theme 1 - Introduction to professional practice

a) Examine the professional issues affecting neonatal nurses/midwives and discuss their role in the contemporary healthcare system
