ACN is encouraged by the recommendations made in the Report of the Royal Commission and Board of Inquiry into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory. ACN supported the establishment of the Royal Commission following Four Corners’ investigation into the happenings at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre in Darwin, which showed the shocking mistreatment of children and young people.
“ACN calls on the Northern Territory and Commonwealth Governments to adopt the recommendations made in the report to prevent deplorable treatment of children and young people from happening in this way again,” explained Adjunct Professor Kylie Ward FACN, CEO of ACN.
“ACN supports the recommendation to close the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre and replace it with an alternative centre. Importantly, I am pleased to see recommendations which address the physical health and mental health of detainees provided in a culturally appropriate way,” said Adjunct Professor Ward.
“With the report highlighting failures in oversight, ACN again proposes the Australian Government adopt the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT) to monitor all places of detention in Australia.”
