Refresher program for Registered Nurses

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

This course is designed for RNs holding general registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia who meet the Recency of Practice Registration Standard of three (3) months practice in the last five years but wish to refresh their knowledge in acute care nursing. It is also ideal for nurses working in non-acute areas of practice that wish to work in acute care.

The program builds on previous knowledge, skills and experience in preparation for demonstration of safe practice.

The refresher program has no clinical placement.

ACN delivers a NMBA approved re-entry to practice program and a bridging program which includes a clinical placement and assessment against the Registered Nurse Standards for Practice/Enrolled Nurse Standards for Practice.

Nurses undertaking the program are registered students with the NMBA and must provide a letter of referral from the NMBA to be eligible to enrol in the program.

ACN is unable to offer clinical placements for nurses wishing to update clinical skills or meet regulatory requirements such as conditions on registration.

Learning outcomes

This course is designed to enable students to draw on the nurse’s previous nursing experience and qualifications and to build on that by providing an introduction to the contemporary requirements of the current day nurse. This includes a nurse who demonstrates professional practice, critical thinking and analysis, provision and coordination of care and collaborative and therapeutic practice.

The modules offered are:

  1.  Professional Issues
  2.  Introduction to physical assessment
  3.  Care and management of a deteriorating patient
  4.  Assessment and management of common respiratory conditions
  5.  Assessment and management of common cardiac conditions
  6.  Assessment and management of common neurological conditions
  7.  Assessment and management of common mental health conditions
  8.  Infection prevention and control
  9. Wound management

Student will accrue 4 hours of CPD per module.

At the end of each module learners will need to complete an assessment quiz. A score of 80% or more in each quiz is needed to progress to the next module. Learners are allowed three attempts at each of the quizzes to be deemed successful for that module.

On successful completion of all modules learners will be able to print out their own certificate of completion.
