There are many misconceptions about the term rehabilitation and understanding this is important to the future of rehabilitation services. The principles of rehabilitation are statements of intent for the delivery of rehabilitation and rehabilitation nursing services, yet their application in rehabilitation nursing is not clearly understood. 

Rehabilitation is known to be effective in improving the functional outcomes of individuals and nursing has a responsibility to enable human function.  Understanding rehabilitation and the principles of rehabilitation is important for achieving this.
