Mental Health Nursing, Allied Health and Psychology Scholarships: Nursing Postgraduate

The Mental Health Nursing, Allied Health and Psychology Scholarships Program is an Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care initiative. The program provides a range of scholarships for mental health nurses, allied health professionals and psychologists to undertake studies in mental health related fields.

The Nursing Postgraduate scholarship provides up to $30,000 for nurses working or intending to work within the mental health sector to undertake postgraduate study. 5% of scholarships will be prioritised to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants.

Applications

Applications for scholarships closed 11:59pm AEST, Monday 10 October 2022 – no late applications can be accepted. All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application early December 2022.

Eligibility criteria

Funding under this scheme is available for applicants who meet the following criteria:

  • an Australian Citizen or permanent resident of Australia
  • are an enrolled nurse or registered nurse with current Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registration
  • works in the mental health sector which includes primary care, community care, psychiatric hospitals, mental health units and aged care services
  • undertaking a course, which commences or is continuing in 2023 at the following level:
    — Graduate Certificate
    — Graduate Diploma
    — Masters.

All courses must be relevant to the applicants work in the mental health sector and enhance expertise in mental health and suicide prevention.

Value of the scholarship

Course Duration Scholarship amount
Graduate Certificate Up to one year part time study Up to a maximum of $7,500 for one year of part time study, which is paid over two part time semesters.
Graduate Diploma Up to two years part time study Up to a maximum of $15,000 for two years of part time study, which is paid over four part time semesters.
Masters Up to two years of full-time study or four years part time study Up to a maximum of $30,000 for two years of full time study or four years part time study. This is paid on a per semester basis, the amount will be determined by your study load.

Selection criteria

Scholarships will be awarded on the recommendation of a selection committee and will be based on how you address the following criteria:

How will your course improve the quality of people’s lives and support you to achieve good outcomes for those accessing your services?

Describe your commitment to working within mental health including:

  • Describe the services you are currently delivering to those accessing your services and the difference you hope to make in your work.

The maximum limit for each question is 200 words. It is recommended that you utilise as much of this as possible.

Please note: information collected on your rurality and being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background will be used as a selection weighting to meet workforce need.
