In 2026, ACN will launch their Member Spotlight, a regular feature highlighting our wonderful nurses, and their inspirational stories.
As a preview to next year’s Member Spotlight, we are delighted to introduce you to Nicole Hibbert MACN, a dedicated ACN member whose passion, leadership and commitment to nursing continue to make a meaningful impact. Learn more below about Nicole’s journey, inspirations and the experiences that have help shaped her professional path.
What inspired you to pursue a career in nursing?
My journey into nursing wasn’t straightforward. I initially studied economics because it was my strongest subject at school, and I felt pressure to pursue university straight away. After completing my degree, I wasn’t sure what direction to take, so I began working in administrative roles; first in a GP clinic and then in a specialist practice. It was there that I discovered my fascination with healthcare: the patient journey, the complexity of medical stories and the science behind it all. This sparked my decision to pursue nursing, driven by a deep interest in anatomy and physiology.
Tell us about your current role and what it involves
I currently work as a Registered Nurse in a tertiary, paediatric-only emergency department. No two shifts are the same, but the core of my role is monitoring, assessing, and intervening for children at risk of deterioration. I also support families by providing education, empowering them to care for their child at home and recognise red flags for when to return. Clinical decision-making begins from triage—sometimes we initiate treatment such as fluid trials while children are still in the waiting room. My role also involves supporting the professional growth of colleagues and students through teaching and role-modelling, helping to strengthen the department’s collective skills.
Why do you believe it is important for nurses to be part of their professional organisation?
Being part of a professional organisation is vital because it strengthens nursing’s collective voice and visibility. Nursing is no longer a profession that can afford to be misunderstood or underestimated. Organisations like ACN give nurses a platform to advocate not just for our patients, but for the profession itself at board tables, in government discussions and in shaping healthcare policy. Membership also provides invaluable opportunities in networking with mentors that have been invaluable in my career, scholarships, leadership, and professional development. Personally, ACN has afforded me the privilege to publish articles, present on national platforms and connect with inspiring nurses across Australia at such an early point in my career. These experiences have broadened my horizons and given me opportunities I would never have had otherwise for which I am eternally grateful.
What is your favourite way to unwind after a busy shift?
Cycling along the river on a sunny day is my favourite way to clear my head. Otherwise, I head to the gym, where being surrounded by friends and laughter helps me reset after a challenging shift.
You have a week’s leave – where are you headed?
Anywhere with sunshine and a pool! For me, true relaxation is being outdoors in the warmth, with time to slow down.
If you were not a Nurse, what do you think you would be doing instead?
It’s hard to picture myself outside of healthcare, but if I wasn’t a nurse, I would probably pursue something connected to history which is another area I’m fascinated by.
What is the best advice given to you?
The best advice I’ve received is to embrace every role and opportunity, no matter how big or small. Each experience teaches you something and introduces you to people who will shape your career in unexpected ways. I was also told that once your feet get itchy or you start to feel complacent, it’s a sign to seek out a new role or challenge—because that’s how you stay interested, motivated, and continue to grow.
What would you say to a Nurse who is considering joining ACN?
Do it! The opportunities, support, and connections you gain are invaluable—both for your personal growth and for the profession as a whole.
