This unit of study is designed to explore issues specific to nursing practice in the cardiac critical care setting. Topics explored in this unit of study include: advanced cardiopulmonary support, heart failure, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease, advanced cardiac pharmacology, valvular heart disease, diagnostic and interventional cardiology, surgical management of heart disease and secondary prevention strategies.

Theme 2: Valvular heart disease b) discuss the need for cardiovascular focused clinical assessment and diagnostic procedures Assessment 2: Essay (1,500 words literature critique) 30% 5
Theme 3: Advanced cardiac pharmacology c) analyse the current pharmacotherapy,  interventional and surgical management options for patients with cardiac diseases Assessment 3: Case analysis (3,500 words) 60% 10
Theme 4: Diagnostic cardiology d) integrate the knowledge of advanced concepts in haemodynamic monitoring and cardiovascular support to prevent complications and optimise patient outcomes
Theme 5: Interventional cardiology & surgical management of heart disease e) evaluate the health education needs of patients undergoing diagnostic, interventional and surgical cardiac procedures
Theme 6: Heart failure f) critically appraise the chronic and progressive nature of cardiac pathophysiology, use of assessment tools and multidisciplinary support needed for patient management
Theme 7: Secondary prevention strategies g) evaluate secondary prevention strategies to optimise long term health outcomes

h) discuss the cultural, ethnic, age and gender issues in relation to the care of a patient with cardiovascular disease.
