Overview
This microcredential aims to develop your respiratory clinical assessment skills and knowledge and apply them to the clinical situation. It is important to assess and interpret respiratory findings with consideration given to the individual’s clinical presentation. You will learn to relate the physiology of oxygen transport to pulse oximetry and recognise the advantages and limitations of information in the clinical setting. An important aspect of respiratory assessment is lung function.
This microcredential will also introduce you to diagnostic tests that individuals suffering from respiratory symptoms may undergo or have to perform. It has been written to give you insight into the purpose of the tests and an understanding of the procedures relevant to nursing care and health education.
This microcredential is the first in a series of three that corresponds to the unit of study 336 Respiratory Nursing.
Entry requirements
Applicable to registered nurses caring for individuals with respiratory conditions regardless of the workplace setting.
Scope of future study
This microcredential can be completed to receive a standalone credential or stacked together in a series of three microcredentials. Completing all three microcredentials in the series allows you to apply for credit towards the unit 336 Respiratory Nursing (6 credit points) to build towards a full Graduate Certificate in Acute Care Nursing at ACN.

Sharron coordinates our Graduate Certificate in Perioperative Nursing. She began her nursing career in the United Kingdom where she worked in primarily in the field of women’s health, both in an acute gynaecological setting and in primary health as a qualified family planning nurse. Sharron has several years of experience within the perioperative setting, mainly in anaesthetics and recovery. She also has extensive experience in the day surgery environment. Sharron has 30 years of nursing experience and sees nursing as not only a science but also an art, with compassion, humanity and empathy at its core.
