Overview
This microcredential introduces the key physiological mechanisms that maintain the body’s internal balance, focusing on acid-base regulation, cardiovascular control, renal function, and fluid and electrolyte homeostasis. You will review foundational concepts such as acids, bases, buffers, and electrolytes, and learn how the kidneys and lungs work together to regulate acid-base balance, including practical skills in arterial blood gas interpretation. The microcredential also explores cardiac function, blood pressure control, renal processes involved in maintaining homeostasis, and fluid balance, before examining how disruptions such as infection, temperature changes, altered energy demands, and toxins affect normal physiological function. Throughout the microcredential, emphasis is placed on connecting core physiological principles to clinical contexts to support your application in healthcare practice.
This microcredential is the second in a series of three corresponding to the unit of study 344 Advanced Applied Pathophysiology (in Clinical Practice).

This microcredential is the second in a series of three. Completing all three in the series allows you to apply for credit towards the unit 344 Advanced Applied Pathophysiology (in Clinical Practice) (6 credit points) to build towards a full Graduate Certificate in Acute Care Nursing, Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing, or Graduate Certificate in Perioperative Nursing at ACN.

Sharron coordinates our Graduate Certificate in Perioperative Nursing. She began her nursing career in the United Kingdom where she worked in primarily in the field of women’s health, both in an acute gynaecological setting and in primary health as a qualified family planning nurse. Sharron has several years of experience within the perioperative setting, mainly in anaesthetics and recovery. She also has extensive experience in the day surgery environment. Sharron has 30 years of nursing experience and sees nursing as not only a science but also an art, with compassion, humanity and empathy at its core.
