Overview
The Australian College of Nursing, supported by the Department of Education, is offering an opportunity to advance your nursing expertise with the Managing Diabetes Across the Lifespan microcredential.
This microcredential is designed for nurses working in acute care, community and paediatric settings. The content revises the pathophysiology of diabetes and, using case studies, focuses on diabetic conditions and management. This microcredential will examine the nurse’s role and aspects of diabetes health promotion that influence people’s lives with diabetes. It encourages using current literature and best practice models to evaluate current clinical practice critically.
This microcredential also explores the dimensions of professional nursing practice, including individualised, research-based, interprofessional, and ethical-based capabilities. Students will gain an understanding of the professional considerations and broader global issues that influence Australian nursing practice and healthcare delivery for the provision of culturally safe, quality care. By undertaking this microcredential, students will build knowledge and skills to advance professional practice by developing autonomy, professional judgement, adaptivity, and leadership capabilities.
This microcredential course (12 credit points) can be stacked towards a Graduate Certificate (24 credit points) priced at ~$12,000. This is a saving of up to $4000.
Entry requirements
Applicable to all registered nurses who work with people living with diabetes.
Scope of future study
The microcredential can be completed as a standalone course.

- evaluate the standards and principles underpinning a holistic and supportive care approach to diabetes nursing care
- discuss the condition trajectory and symptom management impact on people living with diabetes across the lifespan
- critically appraise the nurses’ role in the provision of care for special populations
- explore various strategies and models of care available for managing individuals with advanced disease in a range of environments and settings
- reflect on the role of effective communication and education on outcomes of care
- analyse the professional considerations that influence delivery of care in the contemporary healthcare system
- apply the qualities of effective clinical leadership to practice
- critically review the ethical and cultural issues of care for people diagnosed with diabetes and their support network

» About me
Melissa has over 20 years of nursing experience, predominantly in burns nursing, operating theatres, and intensive care. She holds a Masters in Advanced Nursing Education, and has completed numerous higher education qualifications including a Graduate Diploma in Nursing Science (Burns Nursing), Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education & Management, and has a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
Prior to joining the Australian College of Nursing, Melissa commenced her nursing education journey teaching undergraduate nursing students. She is passionate about creating supportive and engaging learning environments and strongly believes that ongoing nursing education is fundamental to high-quality patient care.
