ACN is proud to support Australia’s aged care workforce by administering postgraduate aged care scholarships on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Health.

If you are ready to take your nursing career to the next level and specialise through postgraduate aged care study, this is the perfect opportunity for you!

You can pursue your career goals through a scholarship for a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters.

Applications are now closed. All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by the end of December 2020.

Eligible courses

Applications will be considered from those who are studying or intending to study the following in semester one 2021:

  • Graduate Certificate
  • Graduate Diploma
  • Masters

All courses must be undertaken with an accredited Australian tertiary institution.

All courses must be relevant to the care of older people or leadership and management:

  • Courses related to the care of older people include, but are not limited to: clinical gerontology, behavioural management, dementia care, wound care, continence care, palliative care and infection control
  • Courses related to leadership and management include, but are not limited to: postgraduate studies in clinical leadership, leadership and management and health services management

Please note: You do not need to be currently enrolled in a course to complete a scholarship application, you simply need to be intending to enrol in semester one 2021, at any accredited course provider in Australia.

Eligibility criteria

The opportunity is open to ACN members and non-members, all eligible applicants are encouraged to apply.

To be eligible for a scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Australian Citizen or permanent resident of Australia
  • Current registration as an enrolled or registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
  • Directly employed in and by a provider of, residential aged care, community aged care service, multipurpose service or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flexible service.
  • Undertaking a course, which commences or is continuing in semester one 2021 in the following:
    • Graduate Certificate
    • Graduate Diploma
    • Masters

New Zealand citizens are only eligible to apply if they have been living in Australia prior to 26 February 2001 and can provide evidence of such, or are classed as permanent residents or Australian Citizens.

Value of the scholarship

Course Duration Scholarship amount
Graduate Certificate Up to one year part time study Up to a maximum of $7,500 for one year of part time study, which is paid over two part time semesters
Graduate Diploma Up to two years part time study Up to a maximum of $15,000 for two years of part time study, which is paid over four part time semesters
Masters Up to two years of full time study or four years part time study Up to a maximum of $30,000 for two years of full time study or four years part time study. This is paid on a per semester basis, the amount will be determined by your study load

Selection criteria

Applicants will need to complete the following selection questions in the application form:

Question 1

How will your course improve:

  • your nursing practice in aged care?
  • your commitment long term to the aged care industry?
  • the quality of people’s lives within the aged care sector?

Question 2

Describe your commitment to aged care including:

  • Why you want to work in your selected industry?
  • The difference you hope to make in your particular field of study.

Applicants will receive additional weighting based on their:

  • Aged care experience and completion of postgraduate courses
  • The applicant’s rurality, which is determined according to the Modified Monash Model (MMM) determines whether a location is city, rural, or very remote
  • If the applicant identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • Applicants who have not yet completed a postgraduate qualification will receive scholarship preference

Applicants will then be notified of the outcome of their application by the end of December 2020.
