This unit of study is designed for registered nurses with a specific interest in, or who work with, clients who have dementia. It provides students with opportunities to develop new knowledge or extend their current knowledge in this challenging specialty. The unit of study explores what is and isn’t dementia, behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, and therapeutic approaches to dementia care. Students will also have the opportunity to examine specific issues related to caring for the person with dementia and caring for the carer. Legal and ethical issues related to end-of-life care will also be considered.

Theme 1: Is it dementia? a) differentiate between causes of  degenerative cognitive impairment in older people. Assessment 1: Online discussions x2 10% 2, 8

Theme 4: Therapeutic approaches to dementia d) using a problem-solving approach analyse and evaluate a range of therapeutic approaches to dementia care to determine their effectiveness in promoting positive outcomes for the person with dementia
Theme 5: Caring for the person with dementia e) critically reflect on current practice in relation to EBP when caring for the person with dementia
Theme 6: End of life dementia care f) critically examine the ethico-legal dimensions of providing end-of-life care to the person with dementia
Theme 7: Professional issues in dementia care g) reflect on the professional issues that impact on caring for the person with dementia across a range of settings
Theme 8: Caring for the carer h) describe approaches to support those caring for the person with dementia.
