This unit of study has been designed to enhance the specialist knowledge and skills required by nurses who care for critically ill or injured paediatric patients presenting to the emergency department. Themes covered within the unit of study include; an introduction to professional practice for emergency nurses, triage and physical assessment, common medical presentations, trauma, mental health presentations and the special needs of infants in the emergency department. This unit of study challenges students to reflect on, and develop their nursing practice using contemporary evidence and industry endorsed clinical practice guidelines.

Theme 1: Professional issues in paediatric emergency nursing a) discuss advanced clinical practice roles within the specialty of emergency nursing and justify their value in relation improved patient outcomes Assessment 1: Online activities x3 10% 2, 4, 10
Theme 2: Patient assessment b) apply knowledge of normal growth and development and physiology to the assessment of unwell children in order to predict deterioration and prioritise nursing management Assessment 2: Case analysis (2,000 words) 40% 5
Theme 3: Triage c) explain the important role of triage in the paediatric emergency department and discuss how these nursing skills may be associated with optimal outcomes Assessment 3: Essay (2,500 words) 50% 9
Theme 4: The critically unwell child d) develop more complex problem solving and clinical decision-making skills related to the nursing care of infants, children and adolescents who present to the emergency department
Theme 5: The critically injured child e) rationalise clinical management strategies in relation to the underlying pathophysiology of critically ill or injured paediatric patients
Theme 6: Child & adolescent mental health – acute presentations f) critically appraise established methods of treatment against current research supporting the provision of contemporary evidence-based practice

g) critically reflect on own values and beliefs regarding the integration of family and culture into the planning and delivery of nursing care to paediatric patients in the emergency department.
